About the Stevensville Rural Fire District
The District Area
The Stevensville Rural Fire District covers a broad and diverse area in northern Ravalli County. It includes the Town of Stevensville and extends to the surrounding rural communities, including parts of Florence. This area spans both sides of the Bitterroot River and is bordered by the Sapphire Mountains to the east and the Bitterroot Mountains to the west. Four stations—Burnt Fork, Sunset Bench, Westside, and Etna—are strategically located to ensure rapid response and reliable coverage throughout the district.
Geography & Infrastructure
The district’s landscape includes a mix of residential, agricultural, forested, and mountainous terrain—each presenting unique challenges for fire protection and emergency response. To effectively serve this area, the Stevensville Rural Fire District relies on a combination of local knowledge, coordinated training, and well-placed stations. Key geographical and infrastructure features include:
-
Bitterroot River: Runs through the center of the district, influencing access and emergency planning.
-
Highway 93: A major transportation route requiring frequent response to vehicle incidents.
-
Mountain Ranges: The Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains define the valley, creating remote areas with limited access.
-
Bridges and Backroads: Numerous bridges and rural roads require detailed familiarity for timely navigation.
-
Mixed Development: A combination of farms, homes, and forestland means the department must be prepared for structure fires, wildland fires, and rescue calls alike.
